Instructor Role

The role of the instructor during an online simulation is much different from traditional simulations where the administrator must process student decisions on their local computer.  Each quarter, the administrator can select one of four preset economies or calibrate economic parameters individually.  Some changes to instructor decision variables during the simulation are communicated to the students, while others remain hidden.

Often students will have questions about the data provided by the simulation each quarter. Instructors should explain any aspects of the Hurdel Simulation that may not be clear, or encourage students to email the Hurdel Game Administrator. It is important not to give advice that would unfairly position one student team to make better decisions than others.

Specific duties of the simulation administrator include:

bullet

Communicating the educational rationale of the simulation

bullet

Announcing the schedule and number of periods to be played

bullet

Choosing if and when special simulation assignments such as pro-forma budgets, union negotiations, or ethical dilemmas will be presented to student teams

bullet

Answering student questions about game data

bullet

Evaluating performance and assigning grades

bullet

Monitoring progression of student teams.  Each period the instructor will receive an email of all student decisions and can view an industry summary online.
